There are academics who will tell you that your child shouldn't be memorizing times tables and similar basic facts.Dr Peter Price, Co-owner, Professor Pete's Classroom
DON'T BELIEVE THEM!
THIS statement is true: educators today avoid rote learning as much as possible.
However, children still need to know all the times tables by heart, no later than 10 years of age (and many kids can learn them even earlier).
If your child hasn't memorized the times tables by age 10, math will continue to be frustrating, slow and confusing, possibly for the rest of his or her life.
Knowing the times tables is an essential foundation for so much future mathematics, including measurement, problem solving, geometry, fractions, and decimals. I recommend that you don't wait any longer to find out if your child meets the expected standard.
